ESMA streamlines Q&As as part of simplification efforts
22 October 2026The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has announced it has updated its Q&As on: (i) market structure under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II; (ii) the Market Abuse Regulation; and (iii) the Short Selling Regulation. This is part of ESMA's Simplification and Burden Reduction initiative. ESMA has withdrawn or amended several Q&As that are outdated, duplicative or no longer relevant due to legislative changes reflected in established market practices or because they are covered in other ESMA guidance, such as supervisory briefings and opinions. The changes are intended to reduce unnecessary complexity and ensure that ESMA's Q&As remain relevant, proportionate and consistent with the current legislative framework. ESMA encourages stakeholders to consider the updated Q&As alongside its other guidance when interpreting the applicable rules.
