New EU Directive on Protection of Persons Reporting Breaches of Union Law
11/26/2019A new EU Directive, known as the "EU Whistleblowing Directive", that aims to enhance the enforcement of EU law and policies by providing protection for individuals that report breaches has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The Directive will apply to whistleblowers working in the private or public sector, whether they are classed as workers, self-employed, shareholders or working under the supervision and direction of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, as well as those who acquired information in previous employment or through the recruitment process for a job they are yet to begin.
The Directive will come into force on December 16, 2019. Member States must implement the majority of the provisions into their national laws by December 17, 2021.
